Kitchen floors foster bacteria

Posted on October 20th, 2011 No Comments

A study released last year revealed that kitchen floors often foster more bacteria than public toilet seats.  The study examined the cleanliness of kitchen floors in student housing.  In an average sized kitchen, researchers found more than 6 million different kinds of bacteria on the floor.

Researchers concluded that often times the cleaning methods used in kitchens by families and businesses actually adds to the spread of bacteria.  For example, many people clean their kitchen floors using a mop and a single bucket of water and cleaning solution.  The mop is typically dipped in the water before cleaning the floor and after to rinse it out; essentially making the cleaning process useless and in some instances harmful.

The study states, “The floor was actually more infested with bacteria after the floor had been mopped.”  Professional janitors overcome these issues and promote clean environments by using special equipment that prevents contamination and cross contamination.
